The Lion’s Den: Group of men and women dancing

Program

MUSEic: Music is the call, Dance is the answer

“Music is therapy. Music moves people. It connects people in ways that no other medium can. It pulls heart strings.” - Macklemore.

Join The Lion’s Den DMV and friends for a day dedicated to select dance styles that were created in response to the music, and a dance style that created the music in response to the movement. Learn DC’s very own, Beat Ya Feet, along with Bmore’s Baltimore Club, and a style from Los Angeles, KRUMP. Be sure to stay for the open hour for a special drumming workshop & exhibition by DMV’s local legend, Malik Dope!

Curator: The Lion’s Den

Schedule

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Baltimore Club

Instructor: TSU Terry

These dance moves, created from Baltimore club music, are usually high-paced and intense due to the fact that Baltimore club music evolved from house music and hip hop, two fast-paced music genres. Come ready to learn high energy footwork with six basic steps.

11:45 AM - 12:45 PM

Krump

Instructor: David Bickerstaff

Many people may be intimidated with the approach of Krump as a style. I hope to welcome all ages and skill levels as we explore the true movement and language of Krump together. Initially the sounds of the krump world stemmed from hip-hop music. Until the desire for our own sound took root in the culture. Prepare to experience real authentic Krump sounds from Krump producers who help give the music for us to create with.

Krump is a street dance and is expressed with intensity, passion and power. Wear clothing that represents you well, is comfortable and you don’t mind sweating in. Footwear should be fitted and allow for consistent movement. We create movement with and rely on our fully body to display Krump authentically.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Beat Ya Feet

Instructor: Sheldon Silvers

This will be a welcoming beginner/intermediate class in Beat Ya Feet, a dance style imbedded in DC history and GoGo music. Come to learn more about GoGo history and the foundational movements of this style.

Participants should wear comfortable clothing and can dance barefoot or in athletic shoes.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Open Hour

Wrap up the day with a brief demonstration of Malik DOPE's hit dance and drumming style "Wae-Work." Join a drum and dance circle jam to celebrate what you've learned today and your own individual swag and personality.

Season 2024 - 2025 Curators

About Dance Sanctuaries

Social Impact and Dance Sanctuaries identifies and works with four season-long curators who are local to the DMV to assemble free movement-based classes on select Saturdays at the REACH. Through the curators, Dance Sanctuaries creates space for communities of targeted styles and cultures with the intention of building a community environment for new to advanced movers. The program empowers curators to look within and celebrate their community by providing them with the resources to gather existing members and expand their reach in the DMV area.
